Abstract
Pocket notebooks have been part of American agrarian culture since the 17th century. Farmers of all stripes use these easily-accessible tools to track data in the field, such as counting cattle or planning crops. In the 21st century t.v. show Yellowstone, we see this in action as John Dutton and his ranch hands record information about cattle in their Rite in the Rain-brand pocket notebooks. The use of notebooks in Yellowstone reveals and reinforces the politics and social spread of the “everyday carry” movement, in which men fetishize the survival tools they keep in their pockets.
