I will be leading a generative poetry workshop in Innovative Poetics at the Barrelhouse conference, "Conversations & Connections: Practical Advice on Writing," in Philadelphia at Temple University on 23 September 2023.
Innovative Poetics: A toolbox of experimental techniques, with Jessica Smith Get out of your head and onto the page! Suitable for beginning writers or experienced pataphysicists, Innovative Poetics offers prompts and models for four innovative poetry methods to expand your toolbox. Physical use of the book and page as forms and somatic generative techniques will be explained and time allotted for play. I love this essay by my long-time and much-beloved colleague Jonathan Skinner, with its many full-color pictures of my chapbooks/book objects over the years. Big thanks to Jonathan for keeping all these! And writing this! And to rob mclennan for publishing this essay.
Literary Studies Lecture Series Tuscaloosa, AL, Mar. 3, 2023, 3 p.m. Zoom (weblink available by request) or in EB 301 In conversation with Johanna Drucker, Distinguished Professor of Information Studies at UCLA, prior to her talk, "Inventing the Alphabet: Technologies of Knowledge Production in the Humanities." The alphabet emerged almost four millennia ago in the ancient Near East and now undergirds contemporary global communication. But the history of how we came to know about its origins and development offer a case study in the ways technologies of knowledge production construct their object of analysis. From classical texts to biblical debates, visual evidence and specimens, charts, graphs, antiquarian curiosities, to modern archaeology and epigraphy, the alphabet has been understood through a multiplicity of media. This talk gives an account of alphabet history but also, alphabet historiography, showing how radical shifts of time scale and evidence have changed our understanding of this crucial form of writing. New Orleans Poetry Festival New Orleans, LA, Apr. 13-16, 2023 “Climate and Culture: A Generative Talk and Workshop," Please join us as we share ideas, texts, and creative practices integrating poetry and cultural critique and toward ceasing the destruction of ecosystems, habitats, biomes, communities and other climate consequences. We’ll also consider poetic practices that examine colonialist/ appropriative cultural mindsets, restore relationships, and help us to think about moving through climate crises into new relational contexts and systems. Workshop leaders will spend some time sharing research, investigations, practices, and creative projects before opening the space to discussion and writing activities. We’ll draw on a decolonial poetics of relational healing, urban walking, southern literature, and close engagement with natural and cultural environments and we’ll invite participants into exploratory exercises for generating ideas and creative works toward a critical and potentially healing poetics of climate and culture.
